TOUGH Symposium 2009
September 14–16, 2009

Overview

A symposium on applications and enhancements to the TOUGH simulator for multiphase fluid, heat, and chemical transport will be held at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), September 14–16, 2009. The TOUGH Symposium 2009 will consist of oral and poster presentations, with a proceedings volume published online. A banquet dinner featuring an invited talk is always a highlight of this meeting. Courses on TOUGH2, TOUGHREACT, TOUGH+, and TOUGH+HYDRATE will be offered immediately preceding and following the Symposium. Selected papers will be submitted for inclusion in special issues of major scientific journals.

Symposium Purpose
The purpose of the symposium is to bring together users of the TOUGH family of codes (which include the serial codes TOUGH2, iTOUGH2, TMVOC, TOUGHREACT, TOUGH-FLAC, TOUGH+HYDRATE, the parallel codes TOUGH2-MP and pTOUGH+, and more) for an open exchange on applications and recent code enhancements. Papers are solicited in all areas of TOUGH applications, including:

* Coupled process modeling (thermal, hydrological, chemical, mechanical, biological) in porous and fractured geologic media
Hydrocarbon recovery
* Geologic CO2 storage/sequestration
Methane hydrate dissociation and gas recovery
Performance assessment of nuclear waste repositories
* Geothermal reservoir studies
Vadose zone hydrology and reaction-transport processes
* Fate and transport of volatile organic compounds
* Reaction-transport modeling for environmental remediation
* Design and analysis of laboratory and field experiments
* Automatic model calibration and uncertainty analysis
* Code verification and validation
* Enhanced process capabilities and user features
* Numerical methods, grid generation, and parallel computing
